Steam Shower Enclosures NJ

A steam shower enclosure is not the same job as a standard shower door installation. Because the space has to hold in vapor instead of just splashing water, every panel, seal, and hinge on the job has to be selected and set with that in mind. What Makes a Steam Enclosure Different

A steam shower has to be sealed floor to ceiling — there’s no gap left open the way there might be on a standard shower door installation. That means full-height jambs run from the base to the ceiling line, every vertical seam gets a proper vapor-tight seal, and the sweep at the bottom of the door is a solid, continuous gasket rather than the lighter-duty sweep used on a non-steam enclosure. If the enclosure has a transom panel above the door, that panel gets sealed in too, and any transom vent has to be an operable one so the room can be vented after use. Skip any one of these details and the steam finds the gap.

Hardware is a separate consideration. Hinges, handles, and channel tracks that live in a steam environment are exposed to sustained humidity and heat cycling in a way a regular shower door never sees, so we spec hardware rated for that kind of constant moisture exposure rather than standard bath hardware. Glass Options

We fabricate steam enclosures from 3/8″ or 1/2″ tempered safety glass. Thicker glass panels are more common on steam jobs because a fully enclosed, sealed unit needs the panel and header rigidity that comes with the heavier glass, especially on any panel that isn’t braced by a full wall on both sides. For glass finish, clear and low-iron (ultra-clear) are the most common choices for steam enclosures since they show off the space, but rain, frosted, or bronze glass all work too if you want some visual privacy. How We Measure and Install

Every steam job starts with a free in-home measure so we can see the framing, the ceiling height, the drain location, and where the transom or vent needs to land. Because a steam enclosure has to seal to the ceiling and to every wall it touches, we go back out for an on-site template after the measure — the framing in a real bathroom is never perfectly plumb or square, and a sealed enclosure has zero tolerance for gaps. Fabrication typically runs 7 to 14 days once the template is finalized, and installation itself typically takes 2 to 4 hours depending on the number of panels and whether we’re also sealing a transom.

Who a Steam Enclosure Suits — and Who It Doesn’t

A steam enclosure makes the most sense in a bathroom that already has a ceiling-height wall or can accommodate a full-height jamb, and where there’s a real steam generator (or plans for one) driving the install. It’s a poor fit for a bathroom with a dropped or sloped ceiling section over the shower, since we can’t seal to a ceiling that isn’t continuous, and it’s a poor fit if the room doesn’t have adequate exhaust ventilation independent of the enclosure itself — trapped steam that has nowhere to go will find every weak point in paint, grout, and drywall outside the enclosure over time. That’s the honest trade-off: a steam enclosure only works as well as the ventilation plan around it, so we’ll talk through your exhaust fan and room layout before we template anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a steam generator before you install the enclosure?

You don’t need it running the day we template, but the generator location and steam line need to be roughed in (or planned) before fabrication, since it affects where we place any vents or panel penetrations.

Can an existing shower door be converted into a steam enclosure?

Sometimes, but usually not without replacing most of the panels. Standard enclosures are rarely sealed at the top or at every vertical seam, so converting one typically means new full-height panels and a new sealing system rather than modifying what’s there.

What glass thickness do you recommend for a steam enclosure?

1/2″ is our default recommendation for larger sealed panels, particularly anything unsupported by a return wall. 3/8″ can work on smaller, well-braced configurations, but we’ll confirm the right spec once we see the layout in person.

Will the enclosure need maintenance the standard doors don’t?

The seals and sweeps see more moisture cycling than on a standard enclosure, so it’s worth checking the gaskets periodically for wear. Hardware finishes rated for humidity hold up well, but any enclosure benefits from a quick wipe-down after use.
